About this activity

Three nations with rich histories, cultures, and breathtaking landscapes are Italy, France, and Switzerland. Exploring their cities and countryside can be made more enjoyable if you are aware of their historical ties.

Rome established the Roman Empire in 753 BC and eventually came to rule over most of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The remains of this empire are visible in the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, and innumerable other historic buildings located across the nation.

Renaissance: Italy emerged as a major hub for art, culture, and science during the 14th century. Renowned artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci were produced by the thriving cities of Florence, Venice, and Milan.

France: A Cultural and Revolutionary Country

The world and Europe have been greatly impacted by France’s rich history.

Medieval Period: During the Middle Ages, France became a strong kingdom, and Paris developed into a hub of politics and culture. During this period, famous buildings like Notre-Dame Cathedral started to be built.

French Revolution: The monarchy was overthrown and a republic was established during the French Revolution in the late 18th century. This turbulent time sparked democratic movements around the globe.

Influence on Culture: France has long been a pioneer in fashion, philosophy, and the arts. The Mona Lisa is one of thousands of pieces in the Louvre Museum in Paris that showcase the nation’s rich artistic legacy.

Switzerland: A Special Mix of Traditions

Switzerland’s neutrality and the coexistence of various languages and cultures have defined its history.

Confederation formation: In 1291, three cantons united to form the Swiss Confederation as a defensive alliance. 26 cantons, each with its own distinct identity, were added over the ages.

Neutrality: Switzerland has a long history of staying out of wars like the World Wars and maintaining its neutrality. As a result, it is now able to serve as a center for international organizations such as the United Nations and diplomacy.

Cultural Diversity: Four national languages—German, French, Italian, and Romansh—are spoken in the nation. This linguistic diversity reflects the cultural influences from neighboring countries, particularly Italy and France.
